Coordinate System Reference

UTM

Universal Transverse Mercator — a single global system of 60 fixed 6°-wide zones. Same formula and scale factor everywhere; only the zone number and central meridian change.

State Plane (SPCS83)

A separate, state-specific coordinate system for each US state (many split into multiple zones), designed to keep distortion below 1:10,000 across each zone. Uses NAD83 datum.

Lambert Conformal Conic (LCC)

Used for State Plane zones that are wider east-west than north-south (most states). Defined by two standard parallels.

Transverse Mercator (TM)

Used for State Plane zones that are taller north-south than wide (e.g. Illinois, Indiana, most Gulf/Atlantic-facing zones), and for UTM globally.

US Survey Foot

The traditional foot definition most State Plane coordinates are published in: 1 meter = 3.2808333... survey feet (1200⁄3937).

False Easting / Northing

A constant added to projected coordinates so that all values within the zone stay positive.

A note on accuracy

UTM is a single, fixed global projection — the math here is standard and unambiguous. State Plane, by contrast, relies on published per-zone constants (central meridians, standard parallels, false origins) that vary state by state. This tool uses the published NAD83 SPCS83 parameters as a reference, but for legal, boundary, or professional deliverables, always verify results against the official NGS/NOAA publication or your state DOT's published values.
