About SlateTablet
Built for the crew, not the office
SlateTablet is a field data capture app for land survey crews. It replaces paper field books with a structured digital workflow — so crews spend less time on paperwork and more time on the ground.
What is SlateTablet?
SlateTablet is two things: an iOS app for field crews and a web portal for company administrators.
In the field, crew members use the iPhone app to capture level loops, invert calculations, field notes, point ranges, and job safety analyses. All data is stored on-device — the app works completely offline, which matters when you're in a drainage easement with no signal. When a job is done, the crew exports a professional PDF and shares it directly from the phone.
In the office, administrators use the web portal at app.slatetablet.comto manage crew members, control access, and keep the company organized. No servers hold your field data — it stays on the crew member's device until they choose to export it.
SlateTablet is built specifically for land survey companies in the United States. It is not a general-purpose notes app or a GIS platform. Every feature exists because a real surveyor needed it in the field.
The problem we're solving
Most survey crews still run on paper. Field books, hand-drawn diagrams, pencil calculations transcribed into spreadsheets back at the office. It works — until a notebook gets left on a tailgate, rained on, or filled with handwriting nobody can read two weeks later.
The tools that exist to replace paper are built for office use: desktop software, complicated licensing, steep learning curves. They assume the person entering data is sitting at a desk with a mouse and a large monitor. That's not where the data comes from.
SlateTablet is designed to be used in the field, with gloves on, in the sun, with a rod person waiting. The interface is fast, the inputs match how surveyors actually think, and the output is a PDF that looks like it came from the office.
What the app does
Level Loops
Record rod readings, compute closure, and apply adjustments in the field. Supports 3-wire leveling and generates a complete level loop PDF ready to include in your deliverables.
Invert Calculations
Document manhole structures, pipe inverts, slopes, and flow directions. Generates professional invert sheets with structure diagrams automatically.
Field Notes
Replace the yellow field book with structured digital notes. Attach geotagged photos to any point, organize by job, and never lose data to rain, mud, or a lost notebook.
Point Ranges
Record coordinate tables and point ranges with descriptions. Export as formatted PDF sheets for office review or client delivery.
Job Safety Analysis
A JSA is built into every job so hazard identification and crew sign-off happens before work starts — not as an afterthought.
PDF Export
Every data type exports as a professional PDF from your phone. Share directly with the office, email to a client, or save to Files. No laptop required.
Free tools for surveyors
In addition to the app, SlateTablet publishes free browser-based calculators that any surveyor can use without an account. These include a horizontal curve calculator, traverse closure calculator, deed plotter, and a comprehensive unit converter covering chains, varas, links, DMS, and more.
